Taking Bella to the Next Level

wpid-wp-1426534758224.jpegThis photo was my view whilst feeding the baby last night. A notebook brimming with ideas about how I can develop my short story Decisions Decisions and turn it into a novel. It was a great exercise, because if I’m being honest, I rarely get good old pen and paper out these days. There is definitely a time and a place though, and last night was it.

I am not under estimating how much hard work it would entail at all. In fact I genuinely don’t know if I’m up to the task at hand right now. My head feels fit to burst though, with characters and potential plot lines. I’m currently sitting in the just bloody do it camp, although where on earth will I find the time to write another book?

So dear readers, I’d like your input – yes you. Would you like to see this story evolve? Do you think Bella is a loveable enough protagonist? Or do you think I’m mad to consider doing this? Please leave a little comment and tell me if you think it’s a good idea or not ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks so much for your kind words of encouragement Tim! I’m failing on the book front at the mo, but have been super busy with other things…as well as work, three kids, a husband and a house… I’m hoping that one of these fine days I’ll feel less time constrained and be able to crack on with the writing ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh my word I couldn’t commit to Nano, I failed miserably last time and can’t put that sort of pressure on myself at the mo. I really do need to find several more hours in the day xx

I’m definitely starting to realise that it’s all about the planning Sophie. I just need to find more hours in the day though xx

Lack of time really is the bane of my life. I have one non-work day now that two of my three are at school and preschool and the pressure to get everything done is phenomenal. I need to find a better way xx

Thanks Emily, I’m at the ‘where do I start’ stage right now. Just don’t think I have it in me, then again last night was particularly bad in the sleeping department… I need to heat those irons up again xx

  12. mummytries says:

    Thank you ๐Ÿ™‚

That’s of course the hard bit…wish me luck!

  14. Bella is definitely a character worth discovering more about. You just have to make sure you create a solid plot and storyline around her.

  15. I think you should go for it!

  16. Go for it, if the ideas are there then get them written down I say. Once you have some chapters drafted you can decide if Bella has the likability factor or whether she needs tweaking a bit. Strike while the iron is hot! : ) x

  17. I don’t know if it matters what we think. But is this something you can see developing? Does Bella feel real to you? Do you enjoy writing about her? If you want, you can find the time. You can do it! x

  18. Oh yes, I like Bella. Although I’m totally with you on the ‘finding time to write’ note. I have so many notes of ideas, not to mention 5000 words of another story I have yet to fully commit to! Keep Bella in your mind, and I look forward to reading about her as and when you manage it xx

  19. I love Bella! She sounds great and I definitely think you should write more about her. I’d read this book, no question. ๐Ÿ™‚

  20. I definitely think Bella has potential! How exciting! There’s so much plot in ‘Decisions Decisions’ – almost too much for a short story really – that I think you’ve got a really strong starting point. In terms of finding the time, I think it’s all a matter of doing as much forward planning as you feel comfortable with and then breaking the writing up into manageable chunks. There’s no rush to get it finished, and hopefully you’ll find the whole process lots of fun! Really looking forward to hearing more xx

  21. I think Bella definitely has potential! If you’ve got all those ideas buzzing around your head I think you should go for it – I’m excited at the possibilities! I wouldn’t want you to put yourself under more stress and pressure but if you can use Bella as an escape, she could be a fun and satisfying use of any ‘me time’ you can find for yourself. Camp Nano is just around the corner too which could be good motivation? I’d love to see where it all leads – good luck! xx

  22. Wow, that is quite an undertaking, Renee! If you’re going into it with eyes open – and you have a wealth of experience from your initial foray into book writing already to draw upon – then why not go for it?

I’ve occasionally tinkered with the notion of writing a book in the past but have never followed through on it. Maybe one day, but I hope I won’t look back in the years to come and regret at least not having tried. So, my only advice to you (and to me!) would be this: have no regrets.

From the initial short story, Bella is off to a promising start. A long way to go, obviously, but that’s part of the fun of the journey of writing a full-length book, right?

I look forward to reading about your progress and Bella’s continuing adventures!
