Maltby Street Market: A Feast for the Eyes

Last weekend I spent the day with one of my oldest and most fabulous BFF’s (and baby boy) while hubby took charge of the parenting reigns for the girls. My friend and I only get one maybe two of these days together per year as she also has three kids and not much spare time. She suggested we do something different to our usual format of a long lunch. We went to Maltby Street Market in Bermondsey, and oh my word am I glad we did. I think I might have just found my Mecca!

Due to my dietary restrictions there was some food I was unable to have but plenty that I could – or at least bits of a dish. Like the burger pictured below, London’s best apparently and I can see why! A generous sized beef patty cooked med-rare, smothered in emmental cheese and juicy onions, topped with the most divine pulled pork and a few slices of gherkin. I avoided the bread but gave the rest of it a good crack of the whip. It did not disappoint.

We shared the burger as well as a falafel salad box from Hoxton Beach which was a different kind of delicious. I indulged in a few tiny samples of truffles, brownies and cakes, the perfect amount of sweet for me after a meal these days. Hubby thoroughly enjoyed his bacon and maple syrup brownie that I brought back for him.

I’m already planning to take another bestie there for our Xmas lunch next month, and cannot wait. Think we’ll treat ourselves to some Little Bird gin cocktails next time round! I’m salivating at the thought of the food.
