Those who read my update last week will know that I had a professional editor critique my book, and was sent the report on Monday afternoon. After reading it several times to fully take on board his suggestions I started thinking of changes that needed to be made. I don’t usually get the time to write during the day on a Tuesday but was presented with the holy grail of dual parenting – both kids napping at the same time – and my editing got off to a flying start.
I did some more work on it on Wednesday, and even put in an hour on Thursday morning before my first day back at work. I didn’t spend much time writing over the weekend, but had a massive session yesterday and can feel the end is in sight. I am desperate to stick to my self imposed deadline of Halloween, because now that I’ve gone back to work I have even less time on my hands to write. Coupled with the fact that my baby is already trying to crawl and my toddler is so desperate for my attention at the moment, it isn’t fair to work on the book when they’re are awake.
One of the main things the editor said was that I needed more of me in the book. More details, more elaboration. It’s what I’ve heard time and again so I’ve filled in lots of little gaps from my own life story. In trying not to be too ‘me me me’ I went the other way, and he described it as being shown the back of my hand. That certainly isn’t the case now.
He also said that it’s absolutely essential to put my face to the book, anonymity would not work with a project like this. Regular readers will know that I’ve already been formulating a plan to ‘come out’ which will coincide with my brand new look blog in a few weeks time. It’s all very exciting, but scary too. I have my reasons for blogging incognito, otherwise I would have put my name to Mummy Tries from the beginning.
In other news I wrote my second piece of flash fiction last Friday, and really enjoyed it. So much so that I wrote my third piece on Monday and have entered it into the Paper Swans flash fiction competition, click here for more details. Wish me luck!
I’d like to apologise for not being very sociable at the moment. Between cracking on with this, and going back to work I’ve not joined in as many linkies and have hardly been on Twitter at all this past week. Bear with me my lovely readers, normal business will be resumed soon (I hope).
Until next time…
