I’ve really been enjoying entering writing comps this year, they’ve given my words a new lease of life. Whilst researching the best comps to enter for this article, I’ve happened upon a fair few children’s writing competitions. Seemed only fair to put this guide together, just in case you have some creative kids on your hands who would like to enter.

Children’s Writing Competitions ending July 2019

The Betjeman Poetry Prize | closing date: 31st July | age range: 10-13 | word count: none | theme: place | prizes: The winner receives £500. The English department of his or her school receives £5000. Home educated pupils should nominate their local library as the prize recipient. The two runners up receive £200 each. The top three poets each receive four Eurostar tickets to Paris, Brussels or Lille. Highly commended entrants receive £50. The top 50 poems are printed in an annual anthology. Every teacher who enters their class joins a prize draw to win a poet visit.

Foyles Young Poets | closing date: 31st July | age range: 11-17 | word count: none | theme: none | prizes: 100 winning poets (top 15 and 85 commended) will be invited to an award ceremony in October 2019.

Competitions ending August 2019

Odd Voice Out / Not Normal Narrators | closing date: 31st August | age range: 14+ | word count: 2000-5000 | theme: diverse and unusual teen voices | prizes: £200 / £100 / £50 also, dedicated anthology will include the top ten tales (available winter ’19).

Competitions ending September 2019

Jacqueline Wilson Creative Writing Prize | closing date: 2nd September | age range: 7-12 | word count: 750-1000 | theme: none, send any story you like through the link above | prizes: winner will get their story published in a Jacqueline Wilson book and 500 runners up will get their names published in the book, winner will also receive a gift bundle worth £100’s.

Festival of Words Young Poet Prize | closing date: 30th November | age range: 4-10 (primary) 11-16 (secondary) | word count: up to 45 lines | theme: my mind, my thoughts | prizes: £50 (primary) £75 (secondary)
