It’s time to break a different cycle

Firstly, I’d like to thank everyone that commented on my post last week, for those not in the know you can read it here.

Over the last month I’ve been reading up on Gut and Psychology Syndrome (GAPS). The theory being that lots of digestive issues, food intolerance, allergies, auto immune disease and much more is down to leaky gut syndrome. Essentially your food ends up leaking into your bloodstream and poisoning your body. This is all driven by abnormal gut flora – where the good bacteria are losing the fight against the bad. I tick too many boxes for this not to be the case, and in order to kiss goodbye to my food sensitivities long term I need to get my gut flora back on track.

The first stage (combined with supplementation, which I’ll write about in a few days) is an Intro Diet broken into six steps. Realistically I should be able to complete it in three weeks, the purpose of this is to heal and seal the gut lining. The next stage is known as the Full GAPS Diet, which entails eating completely naturally for 1-2 years. No processed food, starchy veg, grains, refined sugar or commercially purchased dairy is allowed. “What on earth will you eat?” is what I’m hearing time and again. As with anything in life, how difficult you find something will entirely depend on your starting point. I am starting out from the perspective of food intolerance, which is pretty minor compared to most that start the GAPS Diet. When it comes to what I currently eat, it’s not too dissimilar to Full GAPS anyway.

You see in 2002 I went dairy free. In 2007 after being diagnosed with PCOS, I went refined sugar free – which incidentally lead to reversing my symptoms and naturally conceiving three children. Then in 2012, hubby and I went ‘Paelo’ – and cut out grains (albeit not super strictly). I already cook mostly from scratch, and we have hardly any processed food in our house. For anyone that has read my recipe section you might have noticed a distinct lack of refined sugar, dairy and often grains? I like to hope this will all give me a head start for ‘doing GAPS’, but that of course remains to be seen.

I’ve written at length about breaking what I call ‘the cycle of dysfunction‘, in fact I’m in the process of writing a book about it. I have strived hard as an adult to not be the same as my mother. She ticks many boxes for GAPS herself with an under active thyroid, food intolerance, urtacaria, the list goes on. I would have inherited my issues from her, and passed them on to my own kids. It’s time that I break this cycle, and give my three the very best chance of being healthy that I possibly can.

I shall be starting phase one of the intro diet this weekend. Wish me luck :)

  1. This is so interesting! I have various health issues too, and as time goes on I’m starting to realise more and more that they may be linked to my diet. I’m generally super healthy, but can pinpoint a few foods which trigger certain things. I’ll be watching with interest to see how you get on with this! Xx #sharewithme

  2. I’m really going to look forward to following this series. I really believe that food plays such a role in health, and believe in the idea of Paelo too. I tried to follow it, but I always find myself knocked of course by life and going for convenience over health. Now what does that tell me about my priorities ;)

    1. It’s too easily done Zena! I fell off the paleo wagon big time when I was pregnant with my little dude, but am now back in action and rearing to go :)

    1. Thanks so much Jenny, I’m hoping I’ll be a regular now that things have calmed down a little in my house! Need to get working on my book again, it all ended up falling by the wayside after baby came along. I’ll be picking your brains for publishing tips when I get it finished :)

      1. Don’t worry same happened to me as I found out I was pregnant the week my book was supposed to launch and was super sick and had to cancel launch party and I never rescheduled. Sadly. There are a lot I would have done differently. Good luck. Sorry to hear things were crazy but glad it’s all calming down. Glad you could join in.   6. It’s amazing isn’t it that we have allowed modern foods and eating habits to wreak such havoc with our bodies. My grandparents in the West Indies lived and ate so healthily until Alzheimer’s removed any will to cook from my grandmother and they frequently ate fast food that had become more available – and she suffered horribly in the end with problems induced by digestive poisoning. It really is shocking how far removed we have come from real food, and that cooking from scratch is often the exception in the household not the norm :-(

  7. I think this is so intriguing, the two parallels in your life. Life’s been tough for your family in various ways and good luck to you in seizing the challenge. I’m particularly impressed by what you have done with PCOS and sugar.

    1. Thanks Denise. I’ve been thinking about those parallels a lot lately too!

      The sugar thing was incredible! I was told by two doctors in early 2007 that with a cycle as long as mine I was either not ovulating or would be producing an egg too old to fertilise, so hubby and I weren’t being careful because we didn’t think we had to be…

      After researching the sugar link it seemed PCOS = type 2 diabetes later on if I didn’t change my eating habits, so I did and almost two years to the day of diagnosis I was pregnant with 4yo. I am utterly convinced it was down to the change in diet.

      Nowadays the only PCOS symptom I display is bad skin, but it’s been so much better since having the baby. Food for thought eh? :)

  8. Wow hope this goes well. I too have PCOS and have followed a low GI diet for years, as advised by specialists too, the paleo, low carb, low sugar way of eating is crucial for us. I was lucky that didn’t have any issues conceiving and have researched PCOS thoroughly, I do go through waves of intense exercise then nothing so must get back to it!
